According to CNBC, India’s education minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigned on Saturday after youth protesters demanded he take responsibility for examination paper leaks, with supporters celebrating the move in New Delhi. Abhijeet Dipke, founder of the Cockroach Janta Party that led the protests, said, “We have done it,” while activist Sonam Wangchuk called the resignation “a victory of peace, patience & perseverance.” Pradhan said he had sent his resignation letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, adding that he respected the aspirations and expectations of the country’s youth.

The protests were sparked by a high-profile medical college entrance test leak in May that led to the cancellation of results and a retest for 2 million young people. Police fired tear gas at protesters in New Delhi, and authorities restricted internet access and access to 18 metro stations on Saturday. Pradhan, a senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader, has served in Modi’s government since 2014 and became education minister in 2021.
