North Korean authorities arrested an elite hacking group on July 12 over allegations that it infiltrated internal networks at the central bank and foreign trade bank, stole state trade funds, and laundered the money through cryptocurrency. According to PANews, the group leader was a veteran of a cyber warfare unit under North Korea's Reconnaissance General Bureau and recruited talented IT graduates from Kim Chaek University of Technology and Pyongyang University of Science and Technology.

The suspects allegedly used encrypted communications and wireless devices to carry out the operation. Stolen funds were reportedly split into small amounts, transferred to overseas crypto wallets, converted to cash through intermediaries, and then exchanged for U.S. dollars and other funds near border areas.

Officials in Pyongyang launched an investigation after detecting irregularities in foreign currency payment approvals and overseas IP access records. They later raided a safe house and arrested suspects who were in the process of laundering money, while seizing equipment worth tens of thousands of dollars. The case has reportedly caused concern among North Korean elites and military circles, with senior officials in the Reconnaissance General Bureau and the science and education sectors fearing they could be implicated.
