North Korean authorities arrested an elite hacker gang on July 12 over allegations that it infiltrated the internal networks of the central bank and the foreign trade bank, stole state trade funds, and laundered the money through cryptocurrency. According to ChainCatcher, investigators said the group leader was a veteran of a cyberwarfare unit under North Korea's Reconnaissance General Bureau, and the gang recruited talented IT graduates from Kim Chaek University of Technology and Pyongyang University of Science and Technology.
The stolen funds were reportedly broken into small amounts, sent to overseas crypto wallets, converted into cash through intermediaries, and then exchanged into U.S. dollars and other funds in border areas. Authorities launched the probe after Pyongyang officials detected irregular foreign-currency payment approvals and overseas IP access records, later raiding a safe house and arresting suspects while they were laundering money. The case has reportedly shocked elite and military circles in Pyongyang, while senior officials in the Reconnaissance General Bureau and the technology education sector fear being implicated.
