Secret Service Says Threats Against Protected People Are Up About 40%

According to Axios, the U.S. Secret Service says threats against people it protects are up about 40% from a year ago, with roughly 10,000 threat cases investigated so far this year. The agency said mental health interventions have risen tenfold from the same period last year, including referrals and both voluntary and involuntary commitments involving people encountered during its protective mission. Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi said the increase is forcing the agency to devote more agents and investigative resources to protecting senior officials, while Director Sean Curran said the agency expects bad actors to show up but is treating Friday's rescheduled White House Correspondents' Dinner like any other presidential site. The Secret Service protects the president, Supreme Court justices, cabinet members, former presidents, presidential candidates and visiting foreign leaders.
