According to CNBC, Senate Democrats led by Sen. Elizabeth Warren alleged that Internal Revenue Service chief Frank Bisignano may have lied to Congress about staffing shortages as the tax agency moves to accelerate hiring after deep cuts early in the Trump administration. The letter said Bisignano, who also heads the Social Security Administration, testified in March that he felt good about the IRS workforce and denied in April that the agency was understaffed, while recent reports and an internal memo cited by NOTUS pointed to ongoing shortages and a risk to the 2026 filing season. The Democrats said the IRS inspector general also flagged staffing gaps as a major concern and asked Bisignano to explain whether he knew about the hiring request before his testimony and whether his statements to Congress were accurate.
