More than 100 wealthy Britons, including Gary Lineker and Brian Eno, have written to new prime minister Andy Burnham asking him to raise taxes on the richest people, according to BBC. The open letter from Patriotic Millionaires said a higher levy on wealth could help create a more equal society and called for a “devolution of wealth and power” from the very richest.
The group said it supports a 2% tax on wealth above £10m and said its own poll found most millionaires wanted higher taxes on themselves. The letter follows earlier campaigns for a wealth tax; Burnham had previously declined to rule one out and suggested he may at some point need to “ask for a little more” tax.
