According to Lianhe Zaobao citing Reuters, relentless heavy rain in India's northeastern state of Assam has triggered flooding that killed at least 10 people in the past 24 hours, bringing the death toll over the past week to 36. Local officials described the damage as "unprecedented," and the Assam State Disaster Management Authority said in a Wednesday, July 22, bulletin that the floods have affected more than 650,000 people across 11 districts. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on social media that the scale of destruction was "unprecedented" but gave no further details. The state government said the flooding was mainly triggered by torrential rain in neighboring Nagaland from July 18 to 20, which caused river levels to rise sharply.
