According to Yonhap, South Korea's first investment project in the United States under a bilateral trade deal could be announced as early as late next month, with Seoul's industry minister saying talks are focused on the energy sector. Industry Minister Kim Jung-kwan said the discussions with the U.S. are in the final stages and that he expects an announcement in late August or September if key issues are resolved.

Kim said projects with stable cash flows are preferable from South Korea's standpoint, adding that energy-related projects appear more favorable. He is in Washington for a four-day visit and plans to meet U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and other officials to discuss investment, trade and related issues. South Korea has pledged to invest $350 billion in the U.S. with an annual cap of $20 billion under last year's trade deal.

Kim Yong-bum, South Korea's presidential chief of staff for policy, earlier said the first project could be unveiled between August and September. Kim Jung-kwan also said Seoul and Washington are discussing the projects very closely and are aiming for a win-win outcome. His schedule in Washington also includes attending the opening ceremony of the Korea-U.S. Shipbuilding Partnership Center on Thursday.
