A federal appeals court has refused to let the government delay student loan relief for more than 500,000 borrowers. According to NS3.AI, the Ninth Circuit ruled on July 17, 2026, that the Education Department must move forward for around 170,000 post-class Borrower Defense applicants.

The Sweet v. McMahon settlement has secured at least $23 billion in Education Department student loan relief.
