Federal prosecutors in Illinois have charged Thomas Pavey and Raheim Hamilton with operating Empire Market, a dark web marketplace. Prosecutors allege that between 2018 and 2020, they conducted transactions totaling $430 million through the platform, allowing users to use cryptocurrencies to anonymously buy drugs and steal credit card information. The two were previously detained for selling counterfeit money on AlphaBay, another dark web marketplace. The new charges include drug trafficking, computer fraud, counterfeiting and money laundering, which carry a maximum sentence of life in prison. Law enforcement seized $75 million worth of cryptocurrency and cash and precious metals during their investigation.
