Some Banks Lift Dollar Time Deposit Rates to 4% as Marketing Intensifies

Since July, multiple banks have raised U.S. dollar time deposit rates and stepped up marketing, with Chinese banks leading the move and foreign banks following, according to 36Kr. Annualized rates at some banks have reached 4%. Experts interviewed by Securities Daily warned investors not to chase yield by exchanging into dollars solely for arbitrage, saying renminbi appreciation could offset interest income and even lead to principal losses. They said dollar deposits should be based on genuine foreign-currency needs.
