According to Yonhap, Seoul stocks opened slightly higher Tuesday but soon slipped into negative territory as bargain hunting in beaten-down tech shares faded amid concerns over escalating tensions in the Middle East. The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) was down 38.56 points, or 0.59%, at 6,477.71 as of 9:15 a.m., after rising as much as 0.58% at the open. The KOSPI fell 4.46% on Monday after dropping 6.37% on Friday.
Overnight, major U.S. indexes also closed lower as investors weighed the risk of renewed hostilities in the Middle East while waiting for earnings from major technology companies later this week. The S&P 500 slipped 0.2%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.6%, and the Nasdaq edged down 0.05%. In Seoul, Samsung Electronics rose 2.25% and SK hynix gained 0.28%, while Hyundai Motor fell 3.26%, LG Energy Solution dropped 0.31% and Hanwha Aerospace edged down 0.11%. The Korean won was trading at 1,475.7 against the U.S. dollar, up 2.2 won from the previous session.
