Monad development team Category Labs has proposed a protocol-level transaction ordering rule called unanimity override. The mechanism lets applications on a shared chain express transaction ordering preferences directly, without creating separate appchains or rollups, addressing the trade-off between ordering control and composability. According to Foresight News, the protocol follows application consensus when all apps with shared interests agree on the order of a pair of transactions, while unresolved cases are completed through priority fee ordering.
The paper says the mechanism can still protect transaction ordering security against an adversary that controls a block's default ordering, deploys malicious applications, and injects arbitrary transactions. It covers two types of transactions: those that interact with only a single application, and protected transactions that an attacker cannot cause to be outranked in ordering, such as oracle updates and limit order cancellations.
Category Labs said the mechanism could be applied to PropAMM, on-chain order books, and on-chain auctions. It could also extend rollup-level ordering guarantees to the main chain without cross-chain transfers.
