Citrini analyst jukan said on X that the world’s three largest memory chip makers have stopped developing their own Compute Express Link controllers and are turning to chips designed by outside fabless companies. According to Odaily, Samsung Electronics, SK hynix, and Micron have all reduced or canceled plans to commercialize CXL expansion device controllers.
Micron has already ended in-house controller development and adopted PrimeMass’s solution. SK hynix has also informed major partners that it is ending its internal CXL controller project and is moving related staff to processing-in-memory work. Samsung is using its self-developed CXL controller only for internal research within its R&D team, while reportedly sourcing controllers from fabless suppliers for external products. Industry sources said Samsung has removed its self-developed controller from formal commercialization projects and kept it only as a frontier research project.
