FBI told to stop probing assault claims against ICE agents, report says

According to CNBC, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents were recently told the Federal Bureau of Investigation would no longer investigate claims of assault against federal officers, according to a New York Times report. The report said FBI managers received written notice of the change on Thursday and that some ICE agents were informed by their FBI counterparts. It said Homeland Security Investigations, an arm of ICE, would likely handle such assault claims instead. The Department of Justice and the Department of Homeland Security denied that any oversight change had taken place, saying the FBI will continue to investigate assault cases involving federal officers. The report also said the purported change came days after an ICE agent shot and killed Colombian man Joan Sebastian Guerrero in Biddeford, Maine, and followed the July 7 shooting death of Mexican immigrant Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Houston.
