India Floods, Landslides Kill At Least 19 in Nagaland and Kashmir

According to Lianhe Zaobao citing AFP, floods and landslides in India on Sunday, July 19, killed at least 19 people, and authorities launched rescue operations in the affected areas. Eight people were killed in the northeastern state of Nagaland, which borders Myanmar, and 11 were killed in India-controlled Kashmir. A district magistrate in Nagaland's Mon district, Konyak, said four of the eight bodies had been found and that rescue work was continuing. He added that at least 15 other people were injured. The office of Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Abdullah said in a statement that he was deeply saddened by the flash floods, which caused extensive damage to public and private property, including a bus station, and disrupted the lives of countless people. NDTV reported that at least 11 people were killed in Jammu, with several others missing. The Indian military said personnel and local emergency responders rescued 11 people, including five children, in Rajouri district in Jammu. The India Meteorological Department warned on Sunday that Jammu and Kashmir could see extreme rainfall over the next two days, and officials temporarily suspended the annual Hindu Amarnath pilgrimage in Kashmir. More than 400,000 Hindus took part in last year's month-long pilgrimage in Kashmir.
