American Airlines Plans New Wide-Body Order, Premium Push to Narrow Profit Gap

According to CNBC, American Airlines CEO Robert Isom said the carrier plans to order new wide-body aircraft this year as it tries to close a profit gap with United Airlines and Delta Air Lines. American also plans larger airport lounges, cabin renovations across more of its long-haul fleet and additional premium-seat offerings, including refreshed interiors on its Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners and 777-300ERs in the coming weeks. The airline, which flies about 6,500 flights a day, expects to report second-quarter results on Thursday and will update its forecast then. Analyst estimates call for adjusted earnings of 64 cents a share this year, up almost 80% from last year, while Wall Street expects adjusted earnings to rise to $2.58 a share in 2027. American also said it is building a 37,000-square-foot Admirals Club at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport and is planning new lounge and check-in space at the hub, which is undergoing a $12 billion makeover.
