Zcash’s new Zakura client is the first live piece of a plan to scale privacy payments from roughly one private transaction per second to payment-network scale, with throughput targets of 50,000 transactions per second. According to CoinDesk, Zakura is a fork of Zebra, can prune old data to cut disk usage, and adds compatibility mode for zcashd, which reaches end of life on July 18.

The project comes as Zcash prepares for Ironwood, or NU6.3, which activates on mainnet at block 3,428,143, roughly 8 a.m. Eastern on July 28. The upgrade follows a June flaw in Orchard, the newest shielded pool, that developers patched via the NU6.2 hard fork.
