According to CNBC, two U.S. biotech companies are testing experimental GLP-1 weight-loss treatments for overweight cats, including an Akston Biosciences-sponsored Cornell University study of a once-weekly therapy and OKAVA Pharmaceuticals' MEOW-1 implant designed to release medicine for up to six months. The trials are early stage, and neither product is approved for commercial use. Akston said its study will evaluate about 70 overweight or obese cats over roughly three months, while top-line results from both trials are expected later this year. The article said the work comes as pet-food makers invest in nutrition and longevity products, and as Morgan Stanley analyst Simeon Gutman described a shift from premiumization toward medicalization in the $200 billion U.S. pet economy. Morgan Stanley estimates U.S. pet food will total roughly $65 billion in 2026 and sees overall U.S. pet spending rising from about $196 billion in 2025 to more than $240 billion by 2030.
