Trump Administration Seeks More Control Over AI Model Rollouts

According to CNBC, the Trump administration has taken new steps to assert more control over future artificial intelligence model releases by deciding which companies and entities can access the latest frontier models, according to two people familiar with the matter. Until now, that call had been left to U.S. AI leaders such as Anthropic and OpenAI, which have controlled access to their most powerful models through programs including Anthropic's Project Glasswing and OpenAI's Daybreak. A White House official said the government does not approve private-company AI releases, while also saying any testing or meetings with federal experts are voluntary and that timing and scope decisions remain with the companies. The official said the administration is working with frontier labs to improve security without hindering innovation. The report said the administration last month blocked Claude Mythos 5 and Fable 5 over national security concerns before restoring access after negotiations with Anthropic, and OpenAI said it would limit new models to trusted partners to comply with government requests.
