Trump Threatens Higher Tariffs on Canada Over Wildfire Smoke
2026-07-17 21:58:19
According to Axios, President Donald Trump said Friday on Truth Social that he may raise tariffs on Canada after wildfire smoke drifted from the country into the U.S., triggering health warnings and disrupting outdoor activities. Trump said the "cost of this pollution must of necessity be added to the TARIFFS Canada is currently paying," blamed Canadian officials for not properly maintaining forests and brush, and said he would call Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to ask what Ottawa plans to do. Canadian officials did not immediately respond to Trump's threat. Axios also noted that the Canadian government has acknowledged its wildfire crisis is worsening because of a hotter and drier climate, and that the Canadian Council of Forest Ministers launched a wildfire prevention and mitigation strategy in 2024.
