According to Lianhe Zaobao citing AFP, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz hosted French President Emmanuel Macron at Noervenich air base near Cologne on Friday morning, where the two leaders opened joint defense and security talks after the collapse of the flagship Future Combat Air System (FCAS) fighter project. The leaders later convened with their cabinets at a castle near Cologne, the same site where Charles de Gaulle and Konrad Adenauer reached agreement in 1962 on a friendship treaty between France and Germany.
Both sides are expected to set up a joint steering group to deepen cooperation on radar systems, deep strike capability and missile defense. Macron said on Thursday he wanted the talks to inject new momentum into defense cooperation and help build a strong Europe that unites their strengths. The FCAS project, launched by Germany, France and Spain, broke down last month amid a dispute between Airbus and France's Dassault Aviation.
