South Korean Oil Tanker Successfully Transits Red Sea, Heads Home

According to Yonhap, a South Korean oil tanker has successfully passed through the Red Sea and is now headed back to South Korea, becoming the 14th crude oil shipment to use the route, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries said Friday. The vessel loaded crude at Saudi Arabia's Yanbu Port before crossing the Red Sea, and the ministry did not disclose further movement details for safety reasons. It said the tanker is part of a series of South Korean oil carriers using the route linking the Indian Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea after shipments were diverted away from the Strait of Hormuz, which has been effectively blocked by Iran amid its conflict with the United States since late February. The ministry said South Korean oil tankers that have taken the Red Sea route are arriving at domestic ports one after another to unload crude, and the government views the route as the most realistic option for now because the Strait of Hormuz has yet to stabilize.
