A UK gang that posed as police officers and created a fake police website has been sentenced for stealing $5.4 million in cryptocurrency from holders by calling them and persuading them to move funds into so-called safe accounts. According to Odaily, 23-year-old Hamza Bashir, 25-year-old Kevin Nwamma, and 29-year-old Anthony Ikenwe were sentenced to six years and nine months, 11 years, and 11 years in prison, respectively.
Police said the stolen money was used to buy luxury goods, including a car worth 60,000 pounds, trips to Thailand and Japan, and items from Harrods, Hermès, Louis Vuitton, and Rolex. Officers also found 500,000 pounds in cash in a safe and determined that most of the stolen cryptocurrency was converted into payment cards. The group also underreported their annual income, with one member declaring just 444 pounds.
