According to Lianhe Zaobao citing Reuters, Iran has asked Yemen's Houthi militants to be ready to block a Red Sea oil shipping route if the United States attacks Iran's power infrastructure, according to three sources, in a move that poses a new and serious threat to global energy supplies. Reuters reported on Thursday, July 16, that two anonymous senior Iranian sources and one regional source familiar with the matter said Iran's leadership had discussed the idea and had recently relayed the message to its Houthi allies. The sources did not say how Iran conveyed the request or whether it was made after U.S. President Donald Trump threatened on Tuesday, July 14, to strike Iran's power infrastructure. A source close to the Houthis said the group has completed preparations to attack ships, deployed missiles and drones near the Bab el-Mandeb strait, the gateway from the Gulf of Aden to the Red Sea, and is waiting for orders.
