According to Lianhe Zaobao, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported on Tuesday, July 14, that more than half of US states are facing a gastrointestinal disease outbreak caused by a foodborne parasite. The CDC recorded nearly 7,000 confirmed or suspected cases of cyclospora infection across 34 states. The parasite is transmitted through contaminated food or water, often involving unwashed or undercooked fresh produce. Symptoms include severe diarrhea, loss of appetite, fever, and vomiting. The American Medical Association warned of possible relapses. The outbreak, which began on May 1, is concentrated in Michigan, with significant cases in Ohio and New York. As of July 13, 141 hospitalizations have been reported with no deaths. Health authorities are investigating the source. Michigan health officials suspect salad and lettuce may be linked. Fast-food chain Taco Bell is under investigation by the health department, and some Taco Bell outlets in Michigan have stopped serving lettuce as a precaution.
