According to Lianhe Zaobao citing Reuters, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said on July 15 that the government will establish an "AI Office" under the Prime Minister's department to manage artificial intelligence standards development, and will mandate that data centers become net energy producers and limit water usage. Legislation will be introduced early next year. Albanese said in a speech in Sydney that the approach shifts from piecemeal measures to a coordinated whole-of-government strategy. He said the initiative is a global first and aims to strengthen Australia's attractiveness as an AI investment destination with clearer approvals and simplified compliance. The government faces growing calls for stricter regulation amid concerns over job losses, rising energy costs, and environmental damage from data center water consumption. Australia currently has no specific AI laws, relying on privacy and consumer protection laws and a voluntary AI ethics framework. Climate Council CEO Amanda McKenzie warned that unregulated AI-driven data center growth could lead to energy price spikes and increased climate pollution.
