Heating oil customers whose orders were cancelled and then repriced higher after the US-Israel war with Iran broke out will receive compensation, the UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) said, according to BBC. The watchdog said about 1,700 households were forced to re-order at significantly higher prices or go without fuel, costing them up to £350.

The CMA said some suppliers have agreed to compensate customers and it is preparing court-based enforcement action against firms that refuse. Customers who paid more to replace cancelled orders will receive a payment covering the difference, while those who did not buy replacement oil will have their original orders honoured at the agreed price.

Wholesale oil prices rose from around $70 a barrel at the start of the Iran war in February to almost $120 by the end of March, and the CMA said average retail heating oil prices peaked at 92% higher. The CMA found the price rises largely reflected higher wholesale costs and suppliers did not profit materially, but recommended new rules on price quotes and cancellations and better support for vulnerable consumers.
