According to Axios, Justice Elena Kagan told the House Appropriations Committee on Tuesday that the Supreme Court Police Department expects threats against Supreme Court justices to rise a “very substantial” 38% this year, after a 25% increase last year. Kagan also cited recent testimony from the Capitol Police chief saying threats against Congress are up 50% this year. Justice Amy Coney Barrett said the leaked Dobbs decision led her security detail to send her home with a bulletproof vest after a California man plotted to kill Justice Brett Kavanaugh and potentially other justices. Axios reported the court has requested $18.9 million for expanded protection, including an off-site security command post and cybersecurity hires; the largest item, $14.6 million, would add six protection agents per justice plus 25 security officers and support staff.
