The Port of Dover said it has done “absolutely everything” to prepare for the summer getaway, but warned delays could persist because a new EU Entry Exit System (EES) processing facility built as part of a £40m investment is not being used for cars as the technology has not been activated, according to BBC. Chief executive Doug Bannister said the Western Docks site, equipped with 84 kiosks to record biometric details, cannot be used because French authorities have not switched the kiosks on and no date has been set.

The port declared a “critical incident” during May half-term after waiting times reached four-and-a-half hours with about 8,500 outbound vehicles. Dover expects about 7,500 outbound cars on Friday, rising to nearly 10,000 on Saturday, and about 10,500 outbound cars on both 24 and 25 July. The Department for Transport announced £20m of new funding on Monday to boost infrastructure in Kent, on top of a previous £10.5m investment shared by three English sites with juxtaposed border controls.
