According to CNBC, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement on Tuesday suspended vehicle stops tied to immigration enforcement after agents fatally shot two men in separate incidents six days apart following stops in Texas and Maine. The shift came a day after an officer shot and killed a driver in Biddeford, Maine; the U.S. Department of Homeland Security said the officer opened fire while fearing for public safety as the driver tried to flee, without explaining how the driver posed a threat. Sen. Angus King said the agents involved were not wearing body cameras, and protests were held Monday with more demonstrations scheduled for Tuesday. Immigration advocates said the person shot was a 26-year-old Colombian man authorized to work in the U.S., and internal agency data shared with Reuters showed arrests in Maine more than quadrupled since early June to about 70 per day in early July. The Maine killing and another last week in Houston brought the number of people shot dead during immigration enforcement operations since January 2025 to at least seven.
