Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev said there is significant room for growth in U.S. stock market participation, citing historical increases tied to retirement plans and retail investing platforms.

According to PANews, Tenev said U.S. stock market participation is currently about 65%. He pointed to historical data showing that the spread of 401(k) corporate retirement plans raised participation from about 20% to 50%, and said Robinhood’s emergence further lifted it to above 60%.

Tenev said that opening securities accounts for newborns and promoting broader investing could push U.S. stock market participation to above 90% in the future.
