Global smartphone shipments fell 4% year over year in the second quarter of 2026, according to a report by market research firm Omdia. According to Jin10, Omdia said a prolonged memory crisis raised component costs and contributed to the continued decline in global smartphone shipments.
By brand, compared with the second quarter of 2025, Samsung and Apple gained market share despite the broader downturn, with their shipment shares rising by 2 percentage points and 4 percentage points, respectively.
Omdia analyst Runar Bjorhovde said rising memory costs hit phones priced at $400 and below the hardest. He added that some manufacturers’ memory costs had climbed to more than four to five times the level of a year earlier.
