U.S. media reported that U.S. President Donald Trump has formally notified Congress that fighting involving Iran has resumed. According to Jin10, The New York Times reported on July 13 that it obtained a letter dated July 10 that Trump sent to congressional leaders.
The report said the letter stated that the U.S. military carried out “defensive strikes” on July 7 against targets inside Iran.
The report said the letter further intensified a dispute between Congress and the White House. It noted that both chambers of Congress had previously voted to require the president to end the war or seek approval before continuing action, while the White House insisted Trump was acting within his constitutional authority as commander in chief.
The report also said the U.S. Senate passed a resolution on June 23 to limit the president’s war powers, requiring Trump to end military action against Iran and to obtain congressional authorization before taking future military action against Iran. It said the resolution had previously passed the House of Representatives.
