South Korea’s stock market volatility has climbed to its highest level since the Asian financial crisis in 1998, even surpassing levels seen during the 2008 global financial crisis.

According to Jin10, foreign media reported that South Korea’s equities have been among the biggest beneficiaries of the artificial intelligence boom, while volatility has also surged.

Data showed that an indicator measuring 60-day price volatility for the MSCI Korea Index rose to its highest level since February 1998. Previously, driven by frenzied trading and heavy use of leveraged funds, the MSCI Korea Index reached a record high.

The index has since fallen 28% from its June peak and plunged 10% on Monday, dropping back to levels last seen more than two months earlier.
