No liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers have passed through the Strait of Hormuz since July 11, as security risks around the strategic waterway have increased after Iran attacked merchant ships. According to Jin10, Kpler data showed the disruption is particularly significant because the Strait of Hormuz is Qatar's only maritime export route for LNG to markets outside the Middle East Gulf, and it is also an important shipping route for the United Arab Emirates' LNG exports.
Kpler data showed LNG shipping volumes had begun to recover in June after the United States and Iran signed a temporary peace agreement.
Kpler reported that 40 LNG carriers transited the strait in June, up from 8 in May and 4 in April, while no LNG carriers passed through in March.
