Diego Forlan will be appointed Uruguay’s interim head coach following Marcelo Bielsa’s departure, AUF president Ignacio Alonso confirmed, according to Yahoo Sports. Forlan will lead La Celeste until March 2027, with the federation set to review his position afterward.
Bielsa stepped down after Uruguay’s disappointing 2026 World Cup campaign, which ended with a group-stage exit after taking two points from matches against Spain, Cape Verde and Saudi Arabia. Forlan is also set to coach Uruguay’s Under-20 team at the 2027 South American U-20 Championship and will oversee senior fixtures in the September, October and November international windows.
