FIFA disciplinary chair Mohammad al-Kamali made the decision on his own to waive U.S. striker Folarin Balogun’s World Cup red-card suspension, without input from the other 17 members of the disciplinary committee, according to Yahoo Sports.

Balogun was sent off in the United States’ Round of 32 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina and was set to miss the Round of 16 match against Belgium, but FIFA suspended the ban “for a probationary period of one (1) year” and fined him $40,000. U.S. President Donald Trump and FIFA president Gianni Infantino confirmed Trump called FIFA to request a review, while Infantino said the decision was made without Trump’s influence; Belgium appealed and FIFA denied it before Belgium beat the U.S. 4-1 with Balogun playing.
