ZachXBT posted on the X platform that its fans suffered a social engineering attack posing as members of the a16z team and lost $245,000 after accidentally downloading malicious software to their computers.
It is reported that the scammer claiming to be Peter Lauten, an investor in the a16z team, sent a message to a project team asking about a potential podcast partnership, and the real Peter Lauten changed his X (Twitter) Handle from "peter_lauten" to "lauten", but the a16z official website still lists his old Handle, and several posts on the a16z X account also @his old username. The victim was unaware of this, and was then attacked by the imposter for social engineering, installing a fake conference app called "Vortax" on their device, which was actually malicious software.
