According to CNBC, Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said he suffered a fall last month that left him briefly unconscious and resulted in a hospital stay, leading to a multi-week absence from the Senate after he was hospitalized on June 14. McConnell, 84, said doctors confirmed he did not break any bones or suffer a concussion, and that he did not have a heart attack, stroke, tumors or hemorrhages; he also said he had a mild case of pneumonia while hospitalized. He said he remains fit to serve but will not return to the Senate floor to vote yet on doctors’ advice, and noted he stepped down as Senate GOP leader at the start of this Congress, with Sen. John Thune, R-S.D., taking over. Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear had requested an update on McConnell’s health and fitness to serve, and McConnell said he plans to retire at the end of his term next year.
