South Korean Navy Sailor Missing Near NLL; Search Underway

According to Lianhe Zaobao citing Yonhap, a South Korean Navy sailor went missing on Sunday, July 12, while on a security mission near the Northern Limit Line (NLL) in eastern waters, and the military has launched a search. The Navy said the incident occurred in the morning about 50 kilometers east of Geojin-eup, Goseong County, Gangwon Province; the missing servicemember is a private first class assigned to a frigate. The Navy said the sailor was last seen early Sunday during an internal inspection round aboard the ship and was confirmed missing after failing to report for duty by 8 a.m. The Navy and Coast Guard have deployed more than 10 vessels and multiple helicopters for a joint search, with nearby fishing boats and merchant ships assisting, and the Navy also notified North Korea via an international merchant shipping frequency.
