According to Lianhe Zaobao citing Reuters, days of heavy rain triggered flooding and landslides in southeast Bangladesh, killing at least 44 people and leaving about 1 million stranded. Bangladesh’s Ministry of Disaster Management said on July 11 that floods swept seven districts—Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Bandarban, Rangamati, Khagrachhari, Moulvibazar and Habiganj—trapping 268,000 households. Power outages, damaged roads and disrupted communications have slowed rescue efforts, while washed-out roads and bridges have made it difficult to deliver relief supplies to some hard-hit communities; army and navy personnel have been using boats to bring food, drinking water, medicine and other essentials to remote areas. The week’s rains also triggered landslides in Rohingya refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar, killing 16 refugees, including women and children, the report said.
