China now accounts for roughly 40% of the 50 most widely used AI models worldwide and has overtaken US rivals in monthly token usage. According to BeInCrypto, Chinese models in the top 20 processed 98 trillion tokens in June versus 53 trillion for US models, after Chinese token usage rose 113% from May to June compared with 43% growth for US models.
Apollo Global Management said Chinese models in the top 50 rose to around 20 by May 2026 from five at the start of 2025, while US models fell to around 28 from 33. Alibaba banned staff from using Anthropic’s Claude Code from July 10, citing back-door risks, and urged a switch to its Qoder tool.
