Stephen Chow’s ‘Kung Fu Women’s Soccer’ Tops 100 Million Yuan at Box Office on Release Day

Stephen Chow’s self-written and self-directed film “Kung Fu Women’s Soccer” opened nationwide in China on July 11 and surpassed 100 million yuan ($13.9 million) in cumulative box office including presales as of 11:32 a.m., with 2.84 million admissions, according to Jiemian News. Data from Dengta Professional Edition showed the film also set records for opening-day screenings in China’s summer season, including the highest opening-day showtimes in the past three years and the highest summer-season presale box office in the past three years.

The film’s first-day screening share reached 47.4%, with more than 226,000 showtimes, the report said. Public reports cited by the outlet put total production investment at 380 million yuan, including nearly 190 million yuan for visual effects, with more than 1,200 VFX shots. Maoyan Professional Edition forecast first-day box office above 200 million yuan and total box office above 1.4 billion yuan, while Dengta projected full-day box office of 195 million yuan and total box office above 1.0 billion yuan.
