According to Lianhe Zaobao citing AFP, President Donald Trump on July 9 signed a proclamation delaying new tariffs on commercial aircraft and related parts after a U.S. investigation concluded that foreign actions have “continuously harmed” the U.S. commercial aircraft manufacturing industry and that the United States is overly reliant on foreign supply chains. The proclamation said Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick recommended not imposing tariffs immediately to address potential national security risks tied to imports of commercial aircraft, jet engines, and related components, while leaving room for further action later. The report said the probe was conducted under Section 232 of the 1962 Trade Expansion Act, a provision Trump has previously used to impose tariffs on other sectors, and that the administration is seeking further consultations with trading partners to “adjust” import volumes so they do not threaten U.S. national security.
