Argentine referee Facundo Tello will take charge of France’s World Cup 2026 quarterfinal against Morocco in Boston on Thursday evening, with FIFA appointing a fully Argentine five-man officiating crew for the match, according to Yahoo Sports. It is the first time in the tournament that every match official for a knockout game has come from the same nation.

The appointment follows controversy after holders Argentina advanced with a 3-2 comeback win over Egypt, a match in which Egypt had a goal disallowed and later filed an official complaint to FIFA seeking the removal of referee Francois Letexier and his team. Tello, 44, has refereed in Argentina’s top flight since 2013, officiated at the 2022 World Cup, and has handled matches at this tournament including Canada’s 1-1 draw with Bosnia and Herzegovina and South Africa’s 1-0 win over South Korea.
