China NEV Output, Sales Hit About 7.44 Million in H1; Exports Jump to 2.36 Million, CAAM Says

China’s new-energy vehicle (NEV) production and sales totaled 7.438 million and 7.446 million units in January–June, up 6.7% and 7.3% year on year, with NEVs accounting for 49.6% of total new-car sales, according to Jiemian News, citing data released July 9 by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM). Total vehicle exports rose 65.3% to 5.096 million units in the first half, including NEV exports of 2.355 million units, up 120%.

In June alone, NEV production and sales reached 1.598 million and 1.643 million units, both up more than 20% year on year, and NEVs made up 58.5% of new-car sales. Domestic NEV sales in June were 1.12 million units, down 0.4%, while June NEV exports were 523,000 units, up 160%. CAAM also reported June domestic vehicle sales of 1.773 million units, down 23.3%, including 654,000 traditional fuel vehicles, down 45%; for January–June, domestic vehicle sales were 9.921 million units, down 21.1%, including 4.831 million traditional fuel vehicles, down 27.8%.

CAAM said June vehicle exports hit 1.037 million units, up 75.1%, and noted that in January–June the top 15 NEV-selling groups sold a combined 7.209 million units, up 7.1%, accounting for 96.8% of total NEV sales; the top three were BYD, Geely and SAIC, with a combined share of 47.6%. Among the top 10 vehicle exporters, Chery exported 939,000 units in January–June, up 71.3% and representing 18.4% of total exports, while Geely exported 585,000 units, up 150%.
