According to Axios, President Trump said Tuesday in Ankara that he would not rule out withdrawing additional U.S. troops from Europe as he arrived for a NATO summit, reiterating he was “very disappointed” with allies over their refusal to support U.S. actions against Iran. Axios reported the Pentagon has already reduced U.S. Army brigade combat teams in Europe from four to three and canceled a planned deployment of about 4,000 troops to Poland, while also cutting back the jets, tankers, and warships available to NATO in a crisis. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced a six-month review of U.S. forces in Europe last month, and U.S. Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker said Trump will press allies to move faster toward spending 5% of GDP on defense; Axios also reported an administration official said Trump still wants to take control of Greenland from Denmark, an idea Denmark and other NATO allies oppose.
