According to Axios, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told President Trump in a Friday phone call that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has escalated anti-Israel rhetoric and urged Trump not to approve U.S. weapons sales that would help Turkey modernize its air force, Israeli and U.S. officials said. Trump is traveling Monday to Ankara for a NATO leaders summit and is expected to meet Erdoğan; items under discussion include a $700 million deal for new fighter-jet engines and the possibility of Turkey re-entering the F-35 program after it was removed in 2019 following its purchase of Russia’s S-400 air defense system. Vice President Vance said last week the Pentagon is reviewing how the U.S. could sell F-35s to Turkey despite the S-400, citing legal certification requirements; the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office and the White House declined to comment.
