According to CNBC, President Donald Trump renewed his push for the U.S. to acquire Greenland after arriving in Ankara, Turkey, for a NATO summit on July 7, 2026, saying the island territory “should be controlled by the United States” and suggesting the U.S. could remove all of its armed services members from Europe if the continent continues to resist the idea. In a bilateral meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Trump said Europe’s refusal to support his stance “hurt my relationship with NATO,” and argued Greenland should be controlled by the U.S., not Denmark, which is a NATO member and of which Greenland is a part.
